Meet Paul J. Merkens

Criminal Defense Attorney

Paul J. Merkens has been practicing law, primarily criminal defense, for over 11 years. He started his career at a large law firm before moving to a solo practice. In June 2023, he co-founded Suhr / Merkens Law, P.L.L.C. to further his criminal defense practice. Paul has handled thousands of cases ranging from traffic infractions to serious felonies. He is experienced in every level of criminal defense practice including related cases to include domestic and mental health matters.

Paul is a 2009 graduate from St. Cloud State University having double majored in Political Science and Communication Studies. He graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law in December 2011. Criminal defense was a primary focus of his studies and has been the major focus of his career. He has a passion for being a zealous advocate for those accused of a crime and never backs down from a fight.

Paul is licensed in North Dakota State Courts, the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota, and United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He has also practiced in multiple Tribal Courts in the State of North Dakota.

In his spare time Paul enjoys travelling with his wife, doting over his two children ages four and two, the occasional karaoke night, competitive trivia, live music, camping, being good at skiing, and bad at golf.
